Farmers Perception and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in Tofa Local Government Area, Kano State

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most noteworthy encounters encrustation humanity thereby workable adaptation approaches may diminish it impact globally. The study aimed at examine farmers’ perception and adaptation strategies to Climate Change. Data were collected from a questionnaire survey whereby 281 respondents were selected purposively also five Focus Group Discussion were conducted. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistic such as mean and frequency. The findings revealed that there is a connection between farmers perception and adaptation strategies to climate change in the area. The findings also revealed that there is inadequate awareness to climate change by farmers. Rainfall variability, flood episodes especially in recent years, crop failure due to prolonged dry spells or drought condition are the major perceived effect of climate change identified by farmers. The study recommends that farmers awareness on issues of climate change, improvement on existing support service delivery mechanism, seize on new climate change opportunities, diversify livelihood activity in the state, create small credit programme through its SDG, NEED and Poverty Alleviation Scheme.
